Artist Statement
My practice is somewhere between chaos and control, a process-based exploration of pareidolia and narrative discovery. Every piece begins with an act of surrender: throwing, dripping, spilling, or blowing fluid pigments onto a surface.
These initial, random splatters establish an unpredictable, organic terrain completely free from conscious intent. I want the art to be what it wants to be, without the influence of what i intend for it. To take myself further unto the realm of the random, I have sometimes had others make spills and splatters with no input from me allowed as to medium, size, or color, and then pass those on to me to become my canvas.
The work then shifts from chance to meticulous observation. Guided by a strict, self-imposed framework of rules that dictate how the medium can be manipulated, I use ink line work to delineate and pull forth the forms I see within the shapes.
This rigid boundary does not restrict the work; instead, it forces a deeper negotiation with the surface, transforming accidental bleeds and textured pools into distinct, emergent figures.
As these shapes materialize under the pen, they bring their own histories with them. The process of drawing becomes an act of listening; as the characters take physical form, their motivations, relationships, and environments unfold.
The artwork and the story develop simultaneously, culminating in a single, vital fragment of their narrative. This line of text ultimately serves as the title of the piece, providing a window into the world captured within the ink.
